Statement: JMBF Expresses Deep Concern over BSF’s Killing of Bangladeshi Citizen at Chuadanga Border

Paris, France; September 29, 2023: The Justicemakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF), a human rights organization base in France, is deeply concerned about the killing of a Bangladeshi citizen, Robiul Islam, by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at the Thakurpur border in Damurhuda Upazila of Chuadanga on the night of September 27.

JMBF strongly condemns the incident and calls for the BSF to exercise the utmost caution in carrying out their duties in accordance with international law.

French-Bengali Attorney Joins Hands with JMBF to Provide Pro Bono Legal Support

Paris, September 28, 2023: In a significant development towards the promotion of human rights and justice, prominent French-Bengali attorney Chitro Shahabuddin Maître, a member of the Paris Bar, has agreed to offer her legal expertise pro bono to Bangladeshi citizens residing in France through her collaboration with JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF).

The partnership was formalized during a meeting held on September 26, 2023, at the prestigious 9, Rue du Val de Grâce, 75005 PARIS, where Advocate Shahanur Islam, the Founder President of JMBF, and Maître Chitro Shahabuddin discussed their shared commitment to providing legal support to those in need. Moynuddin Khan, Treasurer of JMBF, also participated in this significant meeting.

Maître Chitro Shahabuddin brings a wealth of legal experience and a strong commitment to human rights to this partnership. She is a graduate of the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and has a remarkable track record of collaborating with various associations dedicated to women's rights, supporting migrants, combating human trafficking, and advocating for access to shelter and decent living conditions. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to the field of human rights, she was honored with the prestigious Simone Goldsmith prize from the Paris Bar in 2022.

Bangladeshi prominent human rights lawyer Shahanur Islam's blog post on LGBTQI+ rights in Bangladesh has been highlighted in the "Country Policy and Information Note: Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, Bangladesh," published by the UK Home Office's Visa and Immigration department on September 5, 2023. The report, covering the period from January to December 2022, paints a grim picture of the challenges faced by legal professionals in the country and calls for urgent action to address the alarming situation.

The report, published in Paris, France on August 10, 2023, is a groundbreaking endeavor that sheds light on the disconcerting incidents of violence targeting lawyers in Bangladesh. It is a meticulous documentation of incidents that includes physical attacks, assault, beatings, murder, rape, kidnappings, fabrication of cases, arrests, threats, intimidation, attempted murder, and judicial harassment.

JusticeMakers Bangladesh Founder Secretary General met with French Foreign Ministry in Paris

Yesterday, an informal meeting took place between Advocate Shahanur Islam, the founder and Secretary General of Justice Makers Bangladesh, and Timothee Truelly, the South Asia Affairs Officer of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs. They met at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs building in Paris to discuss a range of important topics related to Bangladesh.

During the meeting, they talked about the current political situation in Bangladesh and the need for democracy, rule of law, and human rights. They also discussed issues faced by minority communities, such as ethnic, tribal, religious, social dalit, and sexual LGBT communities. They spoke about the persecution of political leaders and workers, extrajudicial killings, and the issue of disappearances.

Human Rights Lawyer Shahanur Islam Joins Hands with ARDHIS for Bangladeshi LGBTQI Asylum Seekers in France

On March 22, 2023, Shahanur Islam, a human rights lawyer from Bangladesh and the founder of JusticeMakers Bangladesh, met with Mr. Eric Lejeune from the Association for the Recognition of the Rights of Homosexual and Trans People to Immigration and Residence (ARDHIS) at the SPACE office in Boulogne-Billancourt, France. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the present situation of LGBTQI+ rights in Bangladesh and seek cooperation to improve the rights of sexual minorities in the country.

During the meeting, Mr. Islam highlighted the numerous challenges faced by LGBTQI+ individuals in Bangladesh, including physical assault, murder, threats, rape, sexual abuse, bullying, discrimination, social stigma, and psychological abuse. He also noted that these incidents often go unreported due to stigma and intolerance from families, society, and the state. Additionally, existing discriminatory laws criminalize same-sex activities and can lead to life imprisonment.
